Amnesty International, a global body, which works for the betterment of the people – against human rights violation in about 150 countries around the World, has now decided to exit India for the reasons that it was not allowed to do its work. It has blamed the Union Government for its decision and without any ambiguous term it clearly said “witch hunt” was the cause for its exit.
The Union Government though denied – any such witch hunt played by it and it fixed fault on Amnesty India – who was crossing its limit and going against its policies. And it said, provided, Amnesty India fall on line, the Government has no problem.
Yesterday, our Country’s National Human Rights Commission has taken note of the statement of Amnesty India and swung into action suo moto by ordering notices to the Union Government and it openly acknowledged the matter was “serious.”
Amnesty India is seen as voice against oppressors and human rights violators and the body is also very vocal on any laws that breaches fundamental rights of the citizen. Way back in 2018, the Organisation’s top official in a press release made it very clear that the steps taken against it by the Enforcement Directorate made it to reduce its workforce to bare minimum need and it has gone on saying that the body does not have funds even to meet salaries and operational expenses.
So for Amnesty India is concerned – the decision to vacate its India Operations has its genesis before 2018. Justice, liberty, freedom of expression…all such human pivotal would not come in hand without Organisations like Amnesty International work for us.
As long as the Governments of the World thinks they are law unto themselves and by oppressive laws they can muzzle the dissented voices – unhesitatingly, history reminds us – no Government was survived in the past for such oppressive action.
