PLIGHT OF WOMEN!

On 3rd December 1948, Srimathi Renuka Roy [West Bengal General] at the Constituent Assembly spoke as follows;

The awakened conscience of women in India and the World is fully alive to the problem of traffic in women and cannot tolerate its continuance, Sir, if you do not accept the Amendment of Mr. B. Das – it is not because, you do not appreciate its purpose, we realise that he wishes to place particular emphasis on the problem of the traffic in the women, but I do think that the Article as it stands does not cover it. I merely pointing this out because it may be thought as the women members of this House are not alive to this problem. It is one of the most urgent of all problems on which Women’s Organisation in this Country have focused their attention for sometimes past—- Act for the prevention of immoral traffic in women do exist already in this Country but their operation is not effective and even if legal Clause are Amended, this can only become really effective and men’s mind changed towards this problem thereby the section of the women are at the mercy of exploiters whereby the very dignity of womanhood is lowered.

Comment: The malady is still prevalent and stern attention shall be focused to enable the dignity of women upheld.
